Burning herbs in every culture has been around since we discovered fire. Different cultures have used and adapted over time everything from culinary, medicinal to spiritual uses of herbs.
Different regions have adapted the use of flora in their area form part of ritual. Smoke was used as an offering to the deities and the sacred for meditation and ritual. It was used to cleanse and purify homes, humans and animals from disease to parasites. Even smoke to preserve and flavour food.
The complexity for preparing plants for incense varied from region to region. Ancient Egypt had very complex recipes and formulas for creating incense India, Nepal, Japan and Christians worldwide as important parts of their spiritual rituals. Among European peasant cultures smoke and smudges were used to clear parasites and bugs of domestic animals and humans alike. Also, part of their medical practice. In France rosemary and thyme were burned in hospitals to keep the air clean and prevent contagion. In Ireland, Scotland and England plants of Juniper, Pine, mugwort, vervain, sage, and thyme were used. With travelers eventually rosemary and lavender were brought in from the Mediterranean these have been grown here for so long now they are not considered blow in’s anymore. In Europe the plants that were most often used were vervain, mugwort, pine, and juniper. Herbs were dried as loose leaf and burned on charcoal or thrown into fires.
